Robo-Buddies Luka and Billy concept

I have always drawn Luka and Billy as younger kids so this is a different take on them. This is what they could look like if they were 12 years old as apposed to 9 (color). When I was young my friends and I spent a lot of time in the woods of Beaverbank, building camps and having adventures so I thought this would be a cool concept for this sketch.

Robo-Buddies Comic Concept

Here is a series of thumbnail sketches I did up for the first Robo-Buddies comic “Origins”. Adam King is doing the writing for the comic...very rough sketchbook stuff at the moment, I will be uploading more later if you want to check back.

Aimee Semple Mcpherson

As an artist I have dilly-dallied in many different types of art, I think most artist do. Portraits were one of the first types of art for me. From the ages 12 to 19 I did a lot, but mostly for friends. I never really made much money off of them by I did gain experience with learning the human face at a young age. My father use to help me out with pointing out small features out on the face that I would miss. Although he wasn’t an artist at the time it was a big help to have someone there pushing me to make the drawing better. Since then he has picked up painting and is doing a great job. His blog is http://www.haroldconrad.blogspot.com/ if you want to check it out.

With all that said, it has been years since I did an old school portrait so I thought I would take another crack at it for fun. This is a picture of my relative Aimee Semple Mcpherson. It is done with graphite. I apologize for the picture quality; it is a picture, not a scan.

Clock Tower Worker

I still have much I want to accomplish with our new http://www.cartoonconrad.com/ site. One thing I want to add is an intro of an animated clock tower worker. The next few sketched are concept for the clock tower worker.

Concept Character

This is a quick character sketch I did up for a kids book. It is on the back burner now.

Fat Day

I was having a fat day a while back so I did this sketch.

Sadie

Here is a sketch I did of my daugther at 3 months old. She is now 2 and a half so it's an older one but I thought I would throw it up anyway.

LUKE

Stealy Claus

Here is what you get if you don't leave Santa cookies! This is actually a pitch Adam King and I created years ago. It has since evolved into something different but still fun. Hopefully we will see this on air in the future.

Merry Christmas!

“Digital Life drawing!”

This is just a quick “CaRtOOnaRiZeD” gesture I did in Sketchbook pro. “Digital Life drawing!” what is the world coming to! Well to be honest it was referenced off a goggle image I liked. BUT, that quick gesture opened up a whole world for me. I first thought it was illegal to do any type of life drawing digitally (I half expected Glen Keane to jump out of the bushes and pile drive me into the gravel once he got word) but now I really enjoy it. I will add more of my Digital Life Drawing for you in the future and if you haven’t already, give it a shot.

Sketchbook

I’m a bit scared I’m going to look like the guy on the left when I’m 50.

Sketchbook

So I might have been swayed by Simba a bit on this one. With that said, I think my New Years resolution for 2010 is to draw more animals.

Sketchbook

Here are some scans from my sketch book. I find I have been working online a lot so I always try to return to paper as much as possible. This first sketch is just me playing around with different shapes.

Menu Mouse Dance

These thumbs are also for an animation that will appear on an updated version of http://www.cartoonconrad.com/ This Menu Mouse Gig will most likely be used as an “Easter egg” on the site.

LUKE

Menu Mouse Transition

I sketched these rough thumbs up for an animation of our mouse jumping off the beam and grabbing a hold of a set of clock tower blueprints which we will use to transition into another scene. This should hopefully appear on the site in the next year.

This is my companies site, http://www.cartoonconrad.com/ if you have time please check it out. We have BIG plans for this site but or course it is put off until things are slower around the studio. If you had the chance to take a peek click on the mouse! I designed him, Rachel Morrison animated him and Adam Gunn cleaned him up. Here are some concept sketches.

Luka Pencil Sketch

Here is another version of Luka from my sketchbook.

Rough Luka and Billy

Clean Luka and Billy

Luka and Billy

As I mentioned Luka and Billy have gone through some transformations. Here is a later version of that transformation. Luka is the one with the red hat which leaves Billy, who has on the glasses.

This is the color version and I will also add the clean and rough if you want to see the process drawings. I used Sketchbook Pro for this version of the Robo-Buddies unlike the original which was done in Flash.

A Blast from the Past! 2002 Robo-Buddies Concept

For those of you who know me you probably also know the “Robo-Buddies”. I created this world back in 2002, it is a story about friendship, comic books and robots. I created the characters by splitting my personally in half, passive and aggressive. I thought these original character designs would be a great start to my new Blog. Since 2002 the designs have changed which you will see throughout my Blog. We are just moving into pre-production on our first Robo-Buddies comic, this will be the start to a series of other comics explaining the entire back-story. My friend and fellow artist Adam King has written the first comic “Origins” and I will be doing the art.

A real honest to goodness Blog!

Ok, finally I am taking the time to create a real honest to goodness Blog! I have been so busy with cartoonconrad.com that creating a personal Blog has always been put on the back burner. Over the next year I have some exciting projects on the go so you might see a lot of concept sketches, thumbnails and hopefully some animation. I will do my best to upload frequently and if you have any thoughts please share. Thanks for dropping by!
